The Apple Pushers, a new documentary film written and directed by Mary Mazzio, narrated by actor Edward Norton, and underwritten by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, follows the inspiring stories of immigrant pushcart vendors who have joined the NYC Green Cart Initiative, the NYC Department of Health’s innovative strategy to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables in New York City’s food deserts – neighborhoods where finding a ripe, red apple is a serious challenge and where obesity and diabetes rates are skyrocketing. Most of the vendors are first-generation immigrants seeking new opportunities – like generations of immigrants in pursuit of the American Dream. The Apple Pushers shares their stories and aspirations while chronicling the issue of access to healthy foods, the obesity crisis, immigration and entry-level entrepreneurship.
