“Fuck Off Amazon + Mi Casa No Es Su Casa / Vete a la mierda Amazon y Mi Casa No Es Su Casa
“No Compromises: Fuck Off Amazon and Struggle Ahead,” – Sarah Gee (Fuck Off Amazon, Brooklyn College Student Union) and Michael Forest (Queens Anti-gentrification Project)
Many credit certain politicians with standing up to Amazon, when, in fact, the credit should go completely to grassroots activists. For years the politicians who supposedly resisted amazon have been the very people encouraging real estate and tech development and destroying our communities. It was only constant pressure from grassroots activists that forced politicians and big non-profits to stand on the side of working class and immigrant communities. Only when grassroots activists and community members stand together uncompromisingly against corporate interests while remaining independent from the political establishment, can we begin to build power capable of winning demands without selling out friends and neighbors.

“Mi Casa No Es Su Casa,” – Pati and Bruno.
This presentation will focus on how Mi Casa No Es Su Casa has organized through art and direct action to inform what we are currently facing in Bushwick. Our aesthetics and politics are based on indigenous perspectives towards the land as native New Yorkers and a collaborative understanding with others that only the most marginalized and impacted should lead this kind of work.

“Mi Casa No Es Su Casa,” – Pati y Bruno.

“What happens in Housing Court? / ¿Qué sucede en la Corte de Viviendas?” – Jennifer Vallone from Project Home, Alexander Chaparro + Kayla Schwarz from Housing Court Answers.
NYC’s Housing Court was created in 1973 as a tool for tenants to demand repairs. Unfortunately, it has since been co-opted by landlords and banks as a place to enforce evictions and collect rent. This workshop will provide information and resources that can empower unrepresented tenants and small homeowners within the legal system. Topics covered include: disputing rent overcharge, qualifying for free legal representation, getting more time to move or make payments, reporting repairs and harassment.

“Space is the Place: Sites of Resistance // El espacio es el lugar,” – Black Trans Media.
A workshop facilitated by Black Trans Media about the importance of space in NYC for low-income LGBT communities of color and our allies. In this workshop, we will map out spaces that exist for our communities, as well as sites of resistance in NYC. Collectively we will talk about the history of land, housing, and space creating a map that highlights past and current spaces supporting our liberation.

— 12:45-1:55pm: Breakout Sessions, Block B / Sesiones enfocadas, Bloque B

***Speyer Hall, 2nd floor / Segundo piso***

“Universal Rent Control in 2019 and how we win / Control de Alquileres Universal en 2019 y cómo lo ganamos,” – Andrea Shapiro from Met Council on Housing.
The rent laws sunset June 15th. Learn how tenants are fighting to win Universal Rent Control and what this vision means for all of New York State.

***Library, 2nd floor / Biblioteca del segundo piso***

This workshop will provide folks with the basics of evictions and housing court, including who the players are, what the steps landlords have to take to legally evict, what tenants rights are and how to handle bullying landlords and attorneys.

***Speyer Hall, 2nd floor / Segundo piso***

“Land-Use for the People: Visions of Abolition & Community Initiation / Uso de suelo para el pueblo: visiones de abolición e iniciación comunitaria,” – #NoNewJailsNYC + GOLES
In a political moment when Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Democratic power structure have largely aligned behind inaccessible land review processes (called ULURP) that privilege real estate developers and the carceral state, organizers are imagining land-use for and by the people. While demanding the immediate closure of Rikers Island without building new jails, #NoNewJailsNYC is working with New Yorkers to develop an abolitionist vision for the $11 billion currently slated for new jails construction.

More information:

On Sunday, March 10, Free University – NYC invites people to learn skills and histories of housing justice so we can create affordable quality housing for all. In 2019, New York has its best opportunity in decades to win housing justice for all. This Spring, New York rent protection laws could either be further eroded by wealthy politicians to benefit landlords, or could be strengthened to include Universal Rent Stabilization. While NYCHA needs $32 billion in repairs, the City and State plan to give Amazon $3 billion to take over Long Island City, Queens, and to spend $80 billion in the next decade to build multiple new jails and increased policing that will fill them. Fights against luxury rezoning are being lost all over the city as City officials steamroll residents’ voices and Community Board votes again and again. In response, several campaigns have emerged to build an alternative future of housing priorities, but we need a shared strategy that takes into account all of our lives. How are these housing struggles linked with racism, police violence, community accountability, disability justice, neocolonial gentrification, domestic violence, homeless shelters and beyond? How were the housing legislative victories of the 1970’s won, and which more recent victories and losses can we learn from?

This free school is intended to create waves of learning and action. Participants will commit to learning how to fight for stable housing — with tenant associations, rent strikes, eviction defense, community land trusts, resisting the landlord/politician power structure, and more. Then, we’ll bring this information back to our homes, shelters, neighborhoods, and workplaces. We’ll uplift the goals of statewide rent control and stabilization, reinvestment in NYCHA, divestment from prisons and policing, and strengthening neighbor support and abolitionist relationships.

Event Accessibility:
For the health and safety of all participants, it is important that we ask that everyone come fragrance-free to this event. University Settlement’s ramp entrance is a few feet to the right of the entrance with steps. This event is held in a multiple floor building that has stairs and with an elevator. Each session will have mixed armless chair seating. There are 3 bathrooms in the building. 2 are in the basement (down a set of stairs, not accessible) and gendered. 1 single-stall bathroom (gender-inclusive, accessible) is on the 2nd floor that folx can go to via the elevator. At the event, people wearing an armband can provide support to help meet needs (e.g. refill water bottles or get food). Surviving ableism is tough.

This TV program presents interviews with the founding trio of the Free University of New York, Sharon Krebs, James Mellen and Allen Krebs. The program describes FUNY as a radical left wing school in opposition to right wing patriotic and free market schools such as Rampart College and Harding College. Who Teaches Them? opens up the social, political and educational landscape of the mid 1960s. Introduced by Jakob Jakobsen.

Wages for Students Roundtable (2:45-3:45)

With George Caffentzis, Silvia Federici, and Wilson Sherwin. Moderated by Malav Kanuga and Jakob Jakobsen.

Wages for Students was an affront and a campaign against the neoliberalization of the university, at a time in the mid 1970s when this process was just beginning. Forty years later, the highly profitable business of education not only continues to exploit the unpaid labor of the students, but now also makes them pay for it. Today, as the student debt crisis reaches staggering proportions, and when students around the world are refusing to continue this collaborationism, the pamphlet’s central call resounds as loudly as ever: “for education against education!”

Wages for Students was written and published anonymously by activists linked to the journal Zerowork during student strikes in the fall of 1975. Deeply influenced by the Wages for Housework Campaign’s analysis of capitalism and emerging in relation to struggles such as Black Power, anticolonial resistance, and the antiwar movements, the authors sought to fight against the role of universities as conceived by capital and its state. The pamphlet debates the strategies of the student movement at the time and denounces the regime of forced unpaid work imposed everyday upon millions of students.

This round table will discuss these and other critical questions with one of the original authors of the Wages for Students perspective as well as fellow travelers. Wages for Students was republished in 2016 by Common Notions with a new introduction by the original authors, George Caffentzis, Monty Neill, and John Willshire-Carrera, alongside a transcript of a collective discussion at 16 Beaver following a public reading of the pamphlet.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be a study group reading of Wages for Students at Interference Archive on January 20th 2pm-4pm with one of the original authors, George Caffentzis. Those joining our study group will have a discount price of Wages for Students courtesy of Common Notions (RSVP & copies will be available in advance at the Interference Archive and you can write to info@commonnotions.org to reserve your copy).

George Caffentzis is a political philosopher and autonomist Marxist. He is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern Maine and a founding member of the Midnight Notes Collective. His most recent book is In Letters of Blood and Fire: Work, Machines, and the Crisis of Capitalism (Common Notions/PM Press, 2013).

Silvia Federici is a long-time feminist, writer, and teacher living in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Italy, Federici has lectured and taught widely in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the U.S. She has participated in numerous international movements and social struggles, including feminist, education, anti-death penalty, as well as anti-nuclear and anti-globalization

Wilson Sherwin—former translator, documentary film producer, electrician—is a Doctoral Candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center completing her dissertation “Rich in Needs: the radical imaginary of the national welfare rights movement.” She is also a member of CUNY Struggle, a militant rank-and-file caucus of the PSC committed to challenging academic precarity.

To transform NYC, start with CUNY – Free University of New York City roundtable (4:00-5:30)

With Amelia Fortunato, Sarah Gee, Shayhan Lewis, and Sabrina Rich. Moderated by Conor Tomás Reed.

The City University of New York has long acted as a locus of broader struggles for working people’s right to thrive in New York City. At present, multiple campaigns are co-emerging to transform the university and the city with a potential impact not seen in decades. CUNY adjunct faculty’s demand for “$7k or Strike” in the current union contract is amassing the power to strike so as to double their salaries and move toward pay equity. CUNY and NYC opposition to Amazon’s proposed $3 billion headquarters in Queens could overturn the mayor and governor’s decision before construction begins. In the face of bigoted faculty members hiding behind “free speech,” women students of color-led coalitions are using media and Black feminist pedagogies to resist how “academic freedom” and Title IX policies may actually protect hate speech. As well, nearing the 50th anniversary of the 1969 City College Strike that created a wave of CUNY Ethnic Studies programs, students are reviving demands to reinstate or defend existing Ethnic Studies to decolonize our curriculum.

In this special roundtable hosted by the Free University of New York City, we will hear from the following:

Amelia Fortunato (she/her) is a CUNY Graduate Center PhD student, John Jay College faculty, and member of CUNY Struggle. Amelia will contextualize the “$7k or Strike” campaign, briefly outlining the history of this rank-and-file rebellion at CUNY; explain the current organizing goals, strategy, and tactics; and discuss the challenges of organizing a strike with union leadership support while navigating the anti-strike Taylor Law.

Sarah Gee (she/they) is a Brooklyn College student and member of the Brooklyn College Student Union, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Fuck Off Amazon. Sarah will discuss the groundswell opposition to Amazon HQ2, which could bring gentrification, over-policing, and displacement, while multiple city services like NYCHA, the MTA, CUNY, and the K-12 public schools system fall apart from disinvestment.

Shayhan Lewis (she/her) is a Brooklyn College student and member of the Brooklyn College Student Union. Shayhan will share how campus coalitions were built to foreground women students of color in the face of racist and sexist faculty statements, and how documentary media and Black feminist pedagogies contribute to raising an intersectional framework of social justice towards fundamentally changing the university.

Sabrina Rich (she/her) is a Hunter College student and member of The Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH). Sabrina will focus on the fight for an Asian American Studies Department at Hunter College, and will also discuss how the underfunding of Ethnic Studies goes hand in hand with the exploitation of adjuncts and the severe lack of resources for students of color.

Conor Tomás Reed (no pronouns), who will moderate the roundtable, is a CUNY Graduate Center PhD student, Brooklyn College faculty, and co-founding participant in the Free University of New York City.

CONFRONT, HEAL, PREVENT:
Free School Against Sexualized Violence
Saturday, March 24, 2018
11:30AM – 4:30PM
University Settlement | 184 Eldridge Street | Lower East Side
Hosted by Free University – NYC & The Performance Project @ University Settlement

EVENT INFOPACK

On Saturday, March 24, Free University-NYC invites individuals and groups to learn together and organize against sexualized and interpersonal violence. Hashtags like #MeToo, #NiUnaMenos, #SayHerName, and #TimesUp circulate widely, and the Women’s March and International Women’s Strike have amassed millions of people on streets across the globe. We take inspiration from such momentum, as we convene towards these next steps:
– knitting vibrant networks of care that follow the leadership of survivors;
– seeding bottom-up processes of sustainable, systemic change through how we engage each other as individuals;
– grounding our feminist prevention strategies in methods of abolition & transformative justice, visions of racial & trans equity, and solidarity with sex workers, crip justice & labor struggles.

While we continue to confront the virulent misogyny of those in positions of immense power—the Donald Trumps and Harvey Weinsteins of the world—we are simultaneously clear that intimate partners, friends, and social movement participants can and do harm us too. As educator-organizer Mariame Kaba reminds us, we must train ourselves to see and organize against mundane violences, faced especially by Black people and femmes of color, alongside the spectacular excesses of structural and state violence.

The questions driving this event are as big as our love for each other and ourselves. From our feelings of rage and sorrow, and our thirst for justice and freedom from violence, we look beyond criminal and retributive justice to ask, imagine, and research: What would a culture that prevents sexual violence feel like? What are the many processes that survivor-centering transformative justice could entail? How can our groups be better at collaborating towards these aims?

We seek proposals for workshops, healing sessions, skill shares, and dialogues to address any of the following themes:

CONFRONT
– Confidential share-outs from accountability processes: discoveries, lessons, questions.
– What are some historical and global examples of confronting sexual violence that we could learn from (ex: Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Iceland)?
– Critiquing our movements as we move: reflecting on erasure of trans people and POC in mainstream accountability movements led by white, cis feminists with punitive solutions.
– How do military and colonial acts of sexualized violence particularly target occupied and indigenous peoples?
– What connections can we draw between gun violence (abusive men, white nationalism, mass shootings) and sexualized violences?

HEAL
– In thinking through and undoing disposability and exclusivity processes that guide how we handle aggressors — if the politics of exclusion perpetuates violence, what are the social structures and language of a survival and accountability culture we would support?
– How do we balance needs for bearing witness and needs for space to move on? What does healing from sexual violence in a way that doesn’t minimize the survivor; being able to hold one’s history even having gained closure; healing without victimhood or superhero mentality look like?
– Creating a nuanced spectrum of accountability as we undo rigid dichotomies between those who’ve experienced harm and those who’ve inflicted harm.
– Workshops focusing on particular issues and populations: undocumented folks, caucuses (survivors, men organizing men against sexual violence, sex workers etc.)
– How can we best support friends, loved ones, and co-conspirators who are survivors of violence? How can we best support yourself as a survivor of violence? How might healing including pleasure?

PREVENT
– If misogyny and transmisogyny are learned, how can we unlearn them in our family life, friendship networks, structures of therapy and media consumption? How does misogyny create genderedness?
– Recognizing that sexualized violence disproportionately targets people with disabilities, how do we undo ableist assumptions of our organizing strategies? What do we learn from intersectional crip justice models about body governance and ableism?
– While transmisogyny and femmephobia are excluded from mainstream analysis against sexual violence, we live in a context of ongoing genocide of trans people of color, especially Black transwomen. What are the relationships between desire, hypersexualization, partner violence and murder?
– Bridging our work: What is the role of police and prison abolition in the movement to end sexualized violence? How do structures of prevention, healing, and accountability relate to our struggles for fair housing, education, healthcare, etc? What do labor struggles like the Coalition of Immokalee Workers against sexualized violence in farm work teach us about accountability?
– Developing Safer & Liberated Spaces and group policies. Centering consent in our movement work: campaigns, decision-making, direct actions, leadership.

“If we agree that the cops and courts are not our friends; if they do not work to keep us safe; if perpetrators are not ‘out there’ but ‘in here’ – what solutions do we magic out of our guts to create safety, justice and healing? Partner abuse in activist communities has been an open secret for a long time.”
–Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, “The Revolution Starts at Home”

“while purely punitive measures can feel briefly satisfying, i know they do not work outside of a transformative justice process, at worst recreating/proliferating harm, shame, repression, and isolation; at best making people act right without healing whatever is broken at the root.”

CONFRONTAR, SANAR, PREVENIR:
Escuelita Libre contra la Violencia Sexualizada
sábado, el 24 de marzo de 2018
11:30AM – 4:30PM
University Settlement | 184 Calle Eldridge | Loisaida

– tejer redes de cuidado vibrantes que siguen el liderazgo de sobrevivientes;
– sembrar procesos ascendentes de cambio sistémico sostenible a través de cómo nos relacionamos entre nosotros como individuos;

Decolonize This Place / Descolonizar este lugar
Third Floor / Tercer Piso

We invite folks to join in a facilitated conversation about concrete steps that can be taken in NYC in 2018. Prior to joining us, we invite you to think about the following within a decolonial framework: What can be done in the city to sustain our movements and each other, and to build power? What strategic actions beyond our issue silos and practice of protests and rallies can we make together? How can we reorient ourselves to see and create decolonial spaces and formations in the city? What discrete projects or methods can we identify so that “becoming ungovernable” is more than a declaration? In solidarity and with love, we note that this is not a conversation to promote any specific project, but an invitation to see where we are and where energies lie, and to facilitate space to connect resources, gather direction, and build our movements.

Stacey Wright, Kristen Lee, Brandon Lee
First Floor / Primer Piso

This workshop will consist of three interactive activities and discussion to engage participants in conversations about the intersectionality of their various identities in the context of the systems that operate in our society. Drawing from themes found in liberation psychology, this workshop aims to help us participate in dialogues to further understand and decode the world we live in and the mechanisms of oppression that affect our understanding of ourselves and others in society. As we gain more self-understanding in context of our world, we can create opportunities to define and envision our future liberated selves with new dialogues.

How can we build community power in the face of violence against immigrants? What can we do if ICE enters our neighborhoods? Brooklyn Defense Committee will discuss some of many possible ways to protect each other from ICE raids and harassment. Through this work, we challenge the way law and “crime” are constructed to protect the elite and punish marginalized communities for simply surviving under white supremacist capitalism.

“The Subways Belong to the People / El Metro pertenece al pueblo”
People’s MTA / MTA Popular
First Floor / Primer Piso

Transportation should be a free, 100% accessible, no cop-zone. In NYC, it’s just the opposite. The fare keeps rising, accessibility is the worst in any U.S. city, and broken windows policing leads to more cops than workers at each station. From Uber to Private Ferries, the MTA—and the financiers and developers who head it—has its own vision for a future transit system in a city with crumbling infrastructure; but what would transit look like if the Subway belonged to the people? In this workshop, we’ll discuss what forces determine decisions around transportation in NYC, how we challenge their influence, and alternative futures for transportation that aren’t determined by the banks. Disabilities rights activists will share their stories using the subways and attendees will be encouraged to share too. We’ll also do an exercise looking at how the media frames issues around the subway, blaming workers and commuters. We’ll end by sharing strategies for a struggle to democratize decision-making around transit in the city and visions for what transportation will look like when we have a say.

Michael Higgins, Jr.
Second Floor Main Room / Sala Principal del Segundo Piso

The election of Donald Trump marked the successful election of a candidate on white identity politics and economic fears. So where does that leave people of color, who are at the bottom of the economic pyramid and seeing hard fought wins towards community power being repealed? This workshop will be a political education conversation on what agenda setting and compromise may look like to secure our survival in America.

Veronica Agard and Shaira Chaer
Second Floor Library / Biblioteca del Segundo Piso

“We are the ancestors of the future and what we do now will have an impact.”
–Yeye Luisah Teish

How can we live lives that our descendants and the next seven generations can be proud of? How can we walk with integrity in the face of an uncertain future? During this cypher, collaborators will explore these questions through a guided healing practice featuring breathwork, a shaking meditation and spellwork (writing) with the intention of rediscovering how to navigate being Ancestors in Training.

“Transcribing experience: intergenerational trauma and the collective ‘we’” explores the concept of intergenerational trauma through epigenetics and a holistic lens. We will examine symptoms of PTSD, compare them to the histories of the African diaspora and indigenous peoples, and analyze the ways that trauma manifests itself in the body. To conclude the workshop, attendees will be paired into groups to complete a writing exercise on the latter point. In transcribing experience, the goal is to create a brave space and foster a sense of community while speaking on personal experiences with trauma.

CUNY Struggle / CUNY Lucha
Third Floor, Corner One / Tercer Piso, Esquina Uno

Austerity is hitting CUNY hard, but in 2017 the shared demands of $7k/course pay increase for adjuncts and free tuition for students inspired a new upsurge in militancy across the university. Centrist efforts to preserve the gains of previous generations through incrementalism and pragmatic realpolitik are a dismal failure. As revolutionaries, how can we transform faculty unionism and student organizing in CUNY from a rearguard battle against the worst aspects of austerity, to a class struggle in which we’re actually fighting? In a time when even defensive strategies test the radical imagination, we invite a collective dialogue to imagine what it would take to turn it all around.

Peter Rugh [The Indypendent] and Nadeem Salaam [Elevtr]
Third Floor, Corner Two / Tercer Piso, Esquina Dos

Participants will share the opportunity to practice and experiment with the basic methods of reporting — interviews, research, writing — introduced in this workshop. We will discuss the ethics of reporting and ways to apply journalism as mode of social change, with the goal that each participant will leave possessing tools helpful to becoming a citizen journalist.

As New York experiences decades of hyper-gentrification, many local news and media staples have shuttered. With a massive racial and class divide it’s important now more than ever to learn how Indie media can step in to speak truth to privilege and decolonization as a practice.

“Climate Change and a Just Transition / Cambio climático y una transición justa”
UPROSE
Third Floor, Corner Three / Tercer Piso, Esquina Tres

Communities of color, locally and globally, are at the forefront of the climate crisis. Communities of color must lead the solutions as we are hardest hit by environmental injustice and climate change. The Just Transition Framework outlines a path to transform our global economy from one that is unjust, extractive, and drives climate change to a regenerative economy based on principles of justice, reciprocity, and sustainability. Participants will discuss the impacts that the extractive economy has had on their communities and their visions for a just economy that empowers communities on the frontlines and restores just relationships with the earth and one another.

“Safe and Sound: Threat Modeling for Activists / Seguro y sano: simulación de amenazas para activistas”
Cypurr Collective / Colectivo Cypurr
Third Floor, Corner Four / Tercer Piso, Esquina Cuatro

Threat is valid, and so are your feelings around it! As activists, a variety of threats may present themselves to us on a daily basis; these threats could also lead us to having LOTS OF FEELS! What can we do to address these threats and feelings, both as individuals and as organizations? The Cypurr Collective, a cyber-security education and advocacy group, will present an introductory workshop on Threat Modeling. Inspired by the book Holistic Security by the Tactical Tech Collective, this workshops will focus on how you and your organization can create safe spaces to discuss and organize the threats in your life.

“The Future is Fiction: Afrofuturism and Radical Speculative Fiction / El futuro es ficción: afrofuturismo y ficción especulativa radical”
Tarilyn Little
First Floor / Primer Piso

“Can a community whose past has been deliberately rubbed out, and whose energies have subsequently been consumed by the search for legible traces of its history, imagine possible futures?” Before and after this question was raised by Mark Dery in 1994, writers of color have been answering with works of literature that challenge us to imagine and live radically. In this workshop, we will explore the past, present, and potential of speculative and afro futuristic storytelling for personal and community healing, empowerment, resistance and liberation.

Corinne Kai
Second floor Library / Biblioteca del Segundo Piso

In this workshop, Corinne Kai will use her experience as an ER rape crisis advocate and sex educator to help survivors understand how to feel pleasure after sexual trauma. Often, survivors put up walls between mind, spirit and body post-trauma and feel blocked from being able to experience sexual or sensual pleasure. Participants in this workshop will walk away with tangible skills to help them feel embodied and sensual either by themselves or with partner(s). This workshop is trauma informed and uses a holistic approach to sex education. It is queer and trans affirming, for survivors of all experiences.

“Thinking the future of the university / Pensando el futuro de la universidad”
Sophie Del Fa [University of Quebec, Montreal / Universidad de Quebec, Montreal]
Third Floor, Corner One / Tercer Piso, Esquina Uno

This workshop proposes to reflect on the future of the university. Firstly, it will give an overview of the history of the university. From that, I will propose people to engage in thinking: what is the University? And how can we define it? Secondly, it will give an overview of alternative forms of universities that have existed since the 20s and initiatives that are created today. Building from that, we will explore all together these models and trying to find the one that suits the best to our contemporary needs. The workshop will encourage people to think about new ways of educating in higher education. It will engage people in thinking about solutions that can be found to transform the university in order to make it more inclusive and attune to today needs (regarding ecology, diversity, equality and so forth).

Third floor, Corner Two / Tercer Piso, Esquina Dos

In this workshop, we will talk about Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee assisting in the organizing of incarcerated people and their loved ones. Come learn more about our organizing with the Stop the Raids Coalition, our inside Newsletter KITE, our revolutionary inside-outside study group, and our ongoing work with family members and incarcerated people!

“Bronx Future of Community Control / Bronx futuro del control comunitario”
Karen Zhou [Take Back The Bronx / Recuperar El Bronx]
Third Floor, Corner Three / Tercer Piso, Esquina Tres

Since Occupy 2011, Take Back The Bronx has been involved in struggles against police brutality and gentrification. In the Bronx, people have been dying from slumlord neglect and police terror. Our workshop will concretely describe our analysis of gentrification and provide strategies towards a Bronx/NYC future with tenant ownership, rent control, and quality public housing. We will analyze lessons from past battles, such as the Jerome Avenue rezoning, and map out our current battlegrounds, such as the proposed Southern Boulevard rezoning. Defend The Bronx! Out with the pigs, landlords, and politicians!

WHO WE ARE

The Free University of New York City is an experiment in radical education and an attempt to create education as it ought to be, building on the historic tradition of movement freedom schools. Our project is born out of a recognition that the current system of higher education is as unequal as it is unsustainable, while vast sources of knowledge across communities are all-too-hidden and undervalued. First conceived as a form of educational strike in the run up to May Day 2012, the Free University has since organized numerous days of free crowdsourced education in community centers, museums, parks, public spaces, and subway stations in New York City.

Mayday Community Space is a new social justice organizing hub for local Bushwick residents and movements citywide. The three-story shared building is an open space for groups to host their events and also home to a number of organizing projects.

MAYDAY SPACE – SAFE SPACE AGREEMENT

– When entering Mayday, you agree to the following statements that ensure we are creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone who wants to participate in creating positive transformational social change: We strive to model relationships and a political culture grounded in solidarity, respect, listening, cooperation, kindness and non-dogmatism.

– We strive to make Mayday a physically accessible space. However, our current building was built over 70 years ago and does not have an elevator or handicap bathrooms. There are ADA bathrooms in the area we can provide information on.

– We do not engage in violence or threats of violence in this space.

– We get explicit consent before interacting physically, or using other people’s belongings and affirm that consent is not just the absence of a “no,” but the presence of a “yes.”

– We strive to create a safe space and to resolve tensions amicably. We prioritize conflict de-escalation over police involvement to avoid people getting stuck in the criminal (in)justice system. We acknowledge that different people in our community have different vulnerabilities to police or hospital interaction, due to their race, immigration status, gender, economic situation, age, criminal justice or medical history, and experience with police violence.

– In the event that a person is harmed, that person should be consulted as to whether to involve the police or not. The decision to call an ambulance should also be made with their consultation. This does not apply when someone is unconscious, their life is in immediate danger, or they are otherwise incapable of consenting.

– We respect everyone’s names, preferred gender pronouns, and expressed identities. We make no assumptions about someone’s race, gender, age or class identity based on their appearance. We also understand that no one is required to share information about their identities.

– We commit to ongoing awareness of our prejudices, the structures of oppression that affect our personal experiences, and our privileges (by virtue of being white, male, cis-gendered, able-bodied, a U.S. citizen, wealthy, and/or straight, among other identities) in this society.

– We recognize that certain behavior—such as shouting someone down in a meeting or trivializing oppression—can be triggering for those who have been on the receiving end of different and multiple forms of oppression.

Radical Futures Free School:
Liberation for our generation and beyond

hosted by Free University-NYC and Mayday Space
Saturday, January 13, 2018

On the one-year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration, in the face of horrific futures imposed from above, Free University of NYC and Mayday Space invite people to come together to create transformative futures from below. We seek proposals for workshops and dialogues in an all-day event that will focus on sharing skills, models, experiences, and visions to begin building our own futures now.

– Submit workshop proposals here (Dec. 18 noon deadline): http://tinyurl.com/RFFS2018
EVERYONE — RSVP / Sign up to Volunteer: https://goo.gl/forms/NFKGLLFdVNd1F8HD3
Share on facebook

Radical Futures Free School will activate all 3 floors of Mayday space with activities and workshops. Childcare, Spanish interpretation, and a community meal will be provided. This volunteer-driven event is FREE but we ask for a $10-20 donation from willing participants to offset costs (although no one will be turned away for lack of funds).

The entrance and first floor are accessible. The building is old and does not have an elevator. Wheelchair-accessible activities can be made available on the Mayday Space first floor. There are gender-neutral bathrooms with stalls that are not ADA-compliant.

****
As we look towards the future, we draw on diverse lineages to “build a new world in the shell of the old” (Industrial Workers of the World), and to create “a world in which many worlds fit” (Zapatistas). As movements “with a future of warriors and growing fire / but with tenderness also” (Audre Lorde), we have to think beyond modes of reactive defense to expand our political imagination and make space for caregiving. Collectively, our movements and strategies can carry us from concrete present goals to a fully liberated future.

Potential workshops / dialogues include…

*Future cities*
– The future of public transportation
– Reversing gentrification
– Small-to-large scale models of popular democracy
– Urban accessibility for all

*Future relations*
– Consent culture and accountability processes
– Mutual aid and care-giving between generations
– Practicing language justice
-Community safety beyond police, prisons, surveillance

*Future economies*

– Thinking beyond the non-profit model

*Future environments*

– A just transition to renewable energy

– Sustainable farming and food justice

*Future cultures*
– Pursuing equity in arts, music, performance, poetry
– Science fiction, Afro-futurism, and radical imaginations

*Entornos futuros*

– Ciencia ficción, afrofuturismo, “altermundos”, e imaginaciones radicales

    • When police approach or arrest you, what are your rights? What can you do to protect yourself – and your community – before, during, and after encounters with police? This interactive workshop, created by public defender Bina Ahmad, answers these questions, and more. For many New Yorkers, because they participate in protests and/or live in over-policed neighborhoods, interactions with NYPD officers are unavoidable. Based on a radical analysis of state power, this workshop provides you with tools to empower and protect yourself, and your community, when these inevitable police interactions occur.

First conceived as a form of educational strike in the run up to May Day 2012, the Free University has since organized numerous days of free, crowd-sourced education in community centers, museums, parks, public spaces, and subway stations in New York City.

“Our Struggles Continue: From Resistance to Collective Liberation”

Free University-NYC seeks proposals for movement-building workshops, discussions, and trainings to be included in our 6th Annual May Day programming.

This year, we’re excited to collaborate with #HealthEquity4BlackLives, ICE-Free NYC, and Mayday Space to provide free social justice education on the weekends before and after May Day.

Over the last few months, the new administration has escalated attacks on those who have been historically marginalized—we are challenged to respond with urgency. With intensifying threats from a government that is increasingly barefaced in its fascism, we cannot wait for those in power to grant us our freedom. In the days surrounding the May Day General Strike, we will come together to share our histories, skills, and wisdoms, while building power towards collective liberation.

For more information and to submit a workshop proposal, please fill out this Facilitator Form (http://goo.gl/5R5mHK) by FRIDAY, APRIL 16.

We specifically encourage proposals that center marginalized voices; draw on horizontal, non-hierarchical, and democratic education methods; and connect the personal to the political. We also encourage facilitators to recommend actions or strategies with participants. If you’re looking for suggestions of workshop themes, you can view this list (http://bit.ly/2oDag60) we’ve compiled with our collaborating organizations.

Call for Content
In addition to workshop proposals, Free University-NYC seeks short educational pamphlets, informational posters, and readings that address issues raised by this year’s themes. For more information / to contribute, please contact: FreeUniversityNYC@gmail.com.

Sun, M5 – Women’s Strikes: Past, Present, and Future

free-u-march-5

Women’s Strikes: Past, Present, and Future
Sunday, March 5, 6-8PM
Mayday Space, 176 St. Nicholas Ave, Brooklyn
On the weekend before the March 8 International Women’s Strike—“A Day Without a Woman”—we invite people to Mayday Space to reflect upon past histories of women’s strikes in order to learn from their breakthroughs and challenges as we prepare for our own. Please check out some brief readings in advance (*coming soon*). During the event, we will feature a few short presentations on international examples of women’s strikes, followed by a group dialogue, and ample time to make signs afterwards. With this interactive event, we’ll get ready for the March 8 strike, as we prepare for what comes next for NYC and global women’s liberation work.

Questions to consider:
– How do racism, transmisogyny and immigration policies—now escalating under Trump—inform the characteristics of a women’s strike?
– How does centering women’s leadership and concerns shape movement work?
– What roles can allies and accomplices play leading up to, during, and after a women’s strike?
– How do we fill our strike with the knowledge/message of all that has been won through struggle and strikes? Signs? Songs? Street theater? Flyers? Casual conversation?
