  • 1st paragraph of methods section (conceptualization and operationalization)

Come to class with at least 2 questions and be prepared to discuss.


 

For class on Thursday 11/12:

Bring in data you have collected.

If Surveys bring in:

  • 1 copy of whole survey
  • Spreadsheet of participants responses

If Interviews

  • Transcript of interview

If Content/Media Analysis

  • Example of content (policy, article)
  • Access to media examples

If databases

  • Will need access to database
  • List of variable in database you plan to explore

If Case Studies

  • An interview or content related to the case

 


 

For Class on Tuesday 11/9:

The point of this assignment is for you to experience the preliminary stages of data collection. Come to class on Tuesday with evidence(discussed in class) that you have begun collecting data and an example of that data.

  • Surveys
    • Create a Survey monkey survey
    • If you can: distribute to 2-3 individuals within or related to sample population
    • Put link on Forum
  • Interview
    • Conduct ONE 10 minute interview
    • Transcribe interview, bring transcript to class
    • If cannot find a person, find an article or news interview with someone related to sample population
  • Existing Data
    • Get access to database
    • Print screen shot of database and Identify 2 variables you would use to analyze
  • Content Analysis
    • Identify content to be used and gain access
    • Print an example of content
  • Ethnography
    • Identify and spend 1 hour in location of study
    • Write down field notes and observations, talk to 1 person, ask 1 question related to study
    • Turn in notes/observations/informal interview info

Read/review the following documents:

Write a paragraph* about the procedures you would follow for your own research project.

  • What are your responsibilities as a researcher?
  • Would you need to gain IRB approval to conduct your research? Would your research be exempt? Why or why not?
  • What would be the risks and benefits for your study participants?
  • Would you need to obtain informed consent? Why or why not?
  • Are you working with a special population that could require special review or further ethical considerations?

*Please type this assignment to hand in on Tuesday.

  • 10-question survey on your topic
  • Typed, formal (as if you would give it out)
  • In directions include who the survey is designed for (sample) and info about inclusion criteria

For class on Thursday October 1st:

Read Chapter 9, Survey research in Social Science Research- Principles Methods and Practices


For class on Tuesday September 29th:

  • Turn in a 2-page article summary of a peer-reviewed article on your topic.
  • Use the Powerpoint slides as a guide, answering the questions posed for each section.
  • This assignment should be typed, doubled-spaced, in 12-pt font, with an APA citation of the article at the end.
  • Make sure to turn in a copy of the article.

For  class on Friday September 25th:

1. Review the library guides below. Please look through them all but be sure to pay close attention to the ones that connect to your chosen research topic.

2. Decide on (and plan to turn in) 4-5 SPECIFIC KEY TERMS you will use find literature on your topic


For  class on Thursday, September 17th:

1. Find a recent news article about the topic you want to focus on for your research proposal.

2. Print the news article. Write a short summary (200+ words).

3. In addition to the summary, on another page please define/Outline:

  • › a possible research question.
  • › the unit of analysis for the research question.
  • › possible variables. (2-3)

For class on Thursday, September 8th:

Chapter 2: Thinking Like a Researcher (p. 9-15)
—In Social Science Research- Principles Methods and Practices

—Sections 2.1-2.2: Basic Concepts & Generating Good Research Questions (p. 23-38)
—In Research Methods in Psychology

—Pay attention to:

  • —Unit of Analysis
  • —Concept
  • —Variable
  • —Independent vs. dependent variable
  • —Operational definition
  • —Correlation vs. Causation

For class on Thursday, September 3rd:

Review “Overview of the research process”  Chapter3 and read chapter 2 in Social Science Research: Principles, Methods, and Practices.

Respond to class prompts about Your Worldview: Ontology and Epistemology. *

  • What is your ontology and epistemology?
  • Ontology: How do you see the world? Is there Social order or radical change?  Is reality something you experience (separate from you) or something you help to create?
  • Epistemology: Can we be objective in our study of the world? Or does our subjectivity persist and interfere?
  • Theory: What is your theory of change? How does change occur in the world? Is it controlled or uncontrolled?
