Welcome back OpenCUNY Community! OpenCUNY has some exciting things on the docket for the upcoming academic year, and we’d like to take a moment to share some of them with you!
In June we said farewell to recent graduate, Dr. Chrissy Nadler (though she will forever be a part of the OpenCUNY team) and hello to Kristen Hackett, PhD Candidate in the Environmental Psychology Program, new Coordinator for Organization and Action and WordPress extraordinaire! Kidding, kind of, but she’s well-versed and here to meet with you to get your site in tip-top shape – thinking through design, content, and more!
A main focus for OpenCUNY this year is exploring new software to expand the pool of resources available to you! As we proceed with testing out new open-source digital tech possibilities, we’d love to hear from you about what your needs and wants are (email us!). We also want to be transparent about some of the updates and directions we’re considering for the platform, so we’ll be posting regular updates that document our explorations.
Another related focus for us this year is to develop a blog series that will increase transparency by communicating to users how & what decisions are made regarding OpenCUNY operations. These decisions may include how we choose themes and plugins for users, how we maintain this multisite WordPress platform, what’s possible on OpenCUNY, and more. Our aim is to spark dialogue about how the platform might evolve and what other digital tech and open source options OpenCUNY could offer GC students.
This year we also plan to host a number of events, our first being a community gathering at 5:30pm on Thursday October 19th. This event will be structured as a museum gallery, aiming to showcase the breadth and quality of the OpenCUNY Community! Come, mingle, and imbibe (all meanings of the word apply) with us! Refreshments and snacks will be provided. RSVP here!
We are planning to host regular drop-in hours as well on the 3rd Thursday of the month during the academic calendar year. Come web and wine with us!
We hope your semester is off to a good start and we hope to see you around the GC and at our first community event in October!
