Ander Egurtzegi – ” Accentogenesis in Basque: From phrasal pitch accent to word-level stress”

Ander Egurtzegi will give a talk at the GC Linguistics Colloquium series entitled “Accentogenesis in Basque: From phrasal pitch accent to word-level stress” on Thursday, April 25th at 6:15 PM.
Abstract:
At least three main accentuation types may be found among modern Basque dialects, based either on stress or on pitch accent. Beginning from a stage when roots were monosyllabic CVCs and words were maximally disyllabic where stress was realized as a H* tone, a historical development of the modern accentual systems will be proposed, giving account of accentual changes across time as well as the development of word-level stress and the dialectal divergence.
