About SASS

Statement of Purpose: South Asian Students and Scholars (SASS) is a chartered organization of the Doctoral Students’ Council, at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). It is an interdisciplinary collective that brings together South Asian and other GC students, faculty, and community members interested in South Asian scholarship, politics, and cultural and social activities.

Mission Statement: SASS’ mission is to provide a platform for cultural interactions and knowledge exchange amongst its members, to organize events related to South Asian scholarship, politics, and culture, and to provide a space for South Asian students to organize around any issues that affect them at the GC and beyond.

Membership: While voting privileges are restricted to matriculated students at the Graduate Center, we extend general membership to all interested students, faculty, and community members.

Governance: Elections will be held annually for two Co-Chair positions, which are open to all voting members. The Co-Chairs will serve as the official liaisons to the Doctoral Students’ Council (ex: they are responsible for maintaining required membership as well as submitting up-to-date constitutions, activity reports, and group status changes to the DSC Co-Chair for Student Affairs). They will also coordinate group activities and apply for funding as needed.

Events: Our events, which are always free and open to all Graduate Center students, include reading, discussion, and conversation groups, invited lectures, film screenings, professionalization events (ex: speakers series, publication workshops, conferences), and social networking.
