Welcome!

Hi everyone! Welcome to the blog portion of my website. Here I plan to post about a number of things that I am involved in. I will post updates to my academic research, interesting experiences in the classroom (or adventures in online teaching!), as well as upcoming events and reflections on those events (conferences, conventions, round tables, etc.). While you could visit the “About” page for more information on who I am, this page is a little less formal.

Right now I am working on an article that focuses on Latinx representation in television, specifically in the Cuban-American remake of One Day at a Time. If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch this show, the first three seasons are available now on Netflix. The fourth season originally aired on PopTV earlier this year, but went on hiatus due to COVID-19. It was recently acquired by CBS where they are currently re-airing the first six episodes. Fingers crossed it goes well and our favorite Latinx family drama is renewed!

In terms of teaching, like most professors, my life is dominated by the move to online learning. I am currently teaching two Great Works of Literature courses (one section of each offered at Baruch), and one course on Cuban Society and Culture. It has certainly been a learning curve and I hope to elaborate on it in future posts. Between the added workload of moving my content online, recording video lectures, and teaching to 20-30 little black boxes on Zoom, it’s been interesting to say the least.

As for upcoming events, I have an online discussion with other Academic Fangirls, about the value of fandom and fanfiction in academics. I haven’t settled on exactly what I will cover during this roundtable, but I have previously discussed connections with assorted works of literature that I teach in my Great Works classes.

And who knows, maybe there will be some fun and random things in here along the way as well. I’d love to share my opinions on pop-culture, current events, and more.

Once again, welcome to the blog. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or ideas that you would like to share with me.
