Supplemental Materials

PaperApplication requirements vary from institution to institution, so pay close attention to what’s being asked of you. In some cases, you may be required to send any of the following materials:

  • WRITING SAMPLE: Whenever possible, send material that has already been published. If you haven’t published anything quite yet, send something that’s representative of your best writing — a manuscript you’ve submitted for publication or are working on for submission, a section of your dissertation, etc.
  • SAMPLE SYLLABI: Sometimes institutions like to ask you to forward sample syllabi for courses you have taught or would like to teach. This one’s pretty self-explanatory.
  • RECOMMENDATIONS: Some institutions will ask for the contact information of, generally, 3-5 individuals who would recommend you to the position. You should choose people who will speak highly of your skills and potential as an academic, and you should always give them a head’s up!! Don’t ever put down someone’s name who you haven’t already asked to recommend you. Sometimes, institutions will require you to send letters of recommendation right off the bat with your initial application, so start requesting those letters now.
  • OTHER: Depending on your discipline, other supplemental materials may be required. Pay close attention so that you’re sure your application is complete when you submit it.
