Bio:

Yael Horowitz is a PhD student in Theatre and Performance at the CUNY Graduate Center and a teaching fellow at City College. Yael is a performer, archivist, and Yiddishist. Her work focuses on historic and contemporary Yiddish performance. She is currently working on theorizing the concept of noentkeyt (nearness) as a way of describing the intimacies and relationships between methodologies, practices, performances, and histories of Yiddishkeyt. Her current archival research focuses on kleynkunst, the Azazel Theatre Troupe in Warsaw, and Moshe Broderzon. Prior to beginning her work at the Graduate Center Yael received a MA from George Washington University in Museums Studies. She has worked at The Tenement Museum, The Building Museum, The Hirshhorn, The History of Diving Museum, and The Jewish Museum and has presented at museum conferences like AASLH and The Inclusive Museum Conference. Yael’s performance work has been featured in The Activist History Review, Digital Yiddish Theatre Project, and In Geveb: Journal of Yiddish Studies. They have had the pleasure of being a KlezKanada Azreli scholarship recipient for the past three years and of teaching Yiddish dance at KlezCummington. Yael is grateful to be able to collaborate with the People’s Puppet Parade in Northampton, with Ozzy Gold-Shapiro, Weaver, Yankl Krakovsky, Etai Rogers-Fett, Scotty Brown, Ira Khonen Temple, Sophie Kreitzberg, and has learned immensely from Jenny Romaine.
