About

CUNY Graduate Center Disability Studies Group

Statement of Purpose: The Disability Studies Group is a discussion and working group that encourages students and faculty from all departments to share current scholarship, interests, and ideas about the growing interdisciplinary field of Disability Studies. While members of the Graduate Center community currently work in topics related to Disability Studies, there exists no venue for bringing these individuals together. This group will create a forum for students and faculty members to discuss recent ideas and scholarship in Disability Studies; to plan events related to Disability Studies, including lectures by CUNY and non-CUNY scholars; and to get advice, feedback, and support on works in progress (abstracts, articles, papers, etc.). Our primary purpose is to foster a scholarly and social community that encourages interaction across disciplines and between students and faculty.

Events: The group meets every two weeks for scholarly engagements including (but not limited to): discussions of readings; lectures and presentations by group members, CUNY faculty members, and outside scholars; and writing workshops on abstracts, papers, and articles by group members.  We will additionally gather for events that focus on activism and community engagement, as well as plan group trips to disability-related public events, shows and exhibitions, and conferences. All events have a social component since they offer an opportunity for those working in various disciplines to come together, network, and consider working together in the future. Group-sponsored events are always free of charge and open to all group members and interested CUNY students and faculty.

Membership: Voting membership shall be open to all currently matriculated Graduate Center students; we also welcome the participation (as non-voting members) of CUNY faculty, CUNY staff, students at other CUNY campuses, CUNY alumni, and students and faculty members from other educational institutions.

Mission Statement: The Disability Studies Group, a DSC-chartered organization, is an interdisciplinary group for CUNY Graduate Center students interested in the study of topics related to Disability Studies.
