First Spanish Methodist Church/La Iglesia del Pueblo

In December of 1969, the Young Lords took over the First Spanish Methodist Church located on 111th street and Lexington Avenue. Dubbing it “La Iglesia del Pueblo”, the site was used as a community space to run a series of programs that included political education, a breakfast and lunch program. The Young Lords were met with violence and forced to leave the facility 11 days later.
