Jennifer Ortiz received her doctoral degree in Criminal Justice from the CUNY Graduate Center program housed at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She is employed at the New York State Sentencing Commission and as an adjunct professor in the Sociology department of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In addition, she is an adjunct professor in the Law and Justice Studies Department at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Mrs. Ortiz is a life long New Yorker who has experienced first-hand some of the difficulties associated with life in the inner city including gang membership, police harassment and exposure to the drug market. A product of one of the toughest neighborhoods in New York City, East New York, Mrs. Ortiz hopes to infuse her street knowledge into the field of academia. Her doctoral research is a qualitative comparative analysis of prison and street gangs.

Jennifer earned a dual degree BS/MA in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. She graduated Summa Cum Laude. She also earned an MPhil and PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center.
