The CUNY-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals (CUNY-NYSIEB), a project of the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS) and the Ph.D. Program in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center, is looking for a Coordinator of NYS Standards Alignment knowledgeable about the education of emergent bilinguals to begin work ASAP.

The Principal Investigator (PI) of the NYSIEB project is Professor Ricardo Otheguy. The Co-PIs are Professors Ofelia García and Professor Kate Menken. The major goals of this initiative are (1) to develop the intellectual and leadership capacities of principals of schools that serve large numbers of emergent bilinguals in New York State, (2) to document successful practices for emergent bilinguals occurring state-wide, (3) to coordinate the State effort in developing Bilingual Common Core Standards that align the current NLA and ESL standards with the Common Core standards.

Primary Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Project Director, the primary duties of the Coordinator of NYS Standards Alignment will be to:

  • Supervise the writing of bilingual New York State standards that are aligned with the Common Core standards.
  • Coordinate meetings with both national and local experts who will provide an advisory role to the alignment process.
  • Ensure that the project meets all deliverables in regards to standard alignment as stated in our agreement with the New York State Education Department.
  • Monitor expenses associated with standards alignment and ensure that we allocate funds appropriately to ensure the success of our project while adhering to state regulations.
  • Provide support on other projects of the initiative as needed.
