Book Talk by Dr. Kevin Kumashiro @ Hunter College

March 22, 2012 – 6pm

Hunter College, West Bldg
8th Floor Faculty Lounge
695 Park Ave
NY, NY 10065

(please bring ID)

Dr. Kumashiro will be speaking on his new book, entitled “Bad Teacher! How Blaming Teachers Distorts the Bigger Picture,” just another example of the many ways in which he continues to fight on behalf of the intellectual and complicated work of teaching and learning.

In his latest book, Dr. Kumashiro takes aim at the current debate on education reform, paying particular attention to ways that scapegoating public-school teachers, teacher unions, and teacher education masks the real systemic problems. He demonstrates convincingly how current trends, like market-based reforms and fast-track teacher certification programs are creating overwhelming obstacles to achieving an equitable education for all children.

Kevin Kumashiro is the founding Director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education and President-Elect (2010-2012) of the National Association for Multicultural Education. He is a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago and the author of “The Seduction of Common Sense: How the Right Has Framed the Debate on American’s Schools.”

Please post this widely, to friends, educators, colleagues, and all those in the public sphere who give thanks to all the hard working teachers who continue to touch the lives of children everywhere. We
support you.

Dr. Kumashiro will also be the keynote speaker at the New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCoRE) Conference on Saturday, March 24th
