Completing Your Paper, Thesis, or Dissertation

Do you need to start writing but don’t know where to begin? Feeling paralyzed by imagined judgmental readers? Having trouble making time to fit writing into your life? This workshop will offer practical strategies for moving forward with your writing, including organizing your time, becoming unstuck in your writing, overcoming perfectionism, and dealing with procrastination.

Karen Starr, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who conducts writing and dissertation consultations.

SUMMER DISSERTATION GROUP

This eight week summer group will help students become more aware of the issues underlying their difficulty in completing their dissertation.  Subsequently, this awareness can help clarify undermining behaviors, identify techniques and strategies to overcome stagnation and foster accountability and motivation.

DISSERTATION DROP-IN HOUR

This drop-in series was developed especially for the doctoral students of the Graduate Center.  This series will be facilitated Dr. Daniel Rothenberg of the Student Counseling Services/Wellness Center.

 

Practical dimensions of completing your dissertation

What you need to know about the “nuts and bolts”, as well as the complexities of completing the dissertation, selecting an advisor and what you must do in order to successfully navigate the dissertation completion process from beginning to end.

 

Personal dimensions of completing the dissertation

What you need to know about the personal dimensions of how you relate to your dissertation topic, your advisor, your family and friends in order to successfully complete the doctorate. What is the inner wisdom that you need to acquire in order to navigate the dissertation and avoid pitfalls on the road to a life in academia?  This workshop will provide mindfulness skills, as well as awareness tools that you need to regulate your life and maintain clarity from the time that you begin your dissertation through the time that you obtain employment beyond the doctorate.

 

You must be a currently registered GC student to participate.  Please bring your GC I.D. with you (must have the Fall 2014 validation sticker).  If you wish to complete a workshop application in advance, please see attached.

Not making enough progress on your dissertation?

The Dissertation Completion Group will help you acquire the knowledge and the skillsnecessary to overcome obstacles in completing the dissertation. This weekly group isdesigned to support doctoral students with focused opportunities to generate strategies,insights and solutions which empower them to move beyond doctoral study – i.e. to finish thedissertation and move on.
