This blog will be quite quiet for the next few months—with regular posting resuming in the Fall semester—but we’re still here to help you out with any health- and wellness-related questions or problems you might have over the summer. Whether you’re a long-standing student, or only joining us in the fall, we’re more than happy to hear from you.

Please feel free to get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to ask, or need assistance with!

(And don’t worry if you’re not sure it’s relevant or something we could help with—it’s always worth asking, and if we can’t be of assistance we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.)

Thanks to everyone who took the 2012 Grad Student Health & Wellness Survey! Here are some results from the survey, below, including selections of your comments.

We’re already working on addressing your suggestions, comments, and complaints—and we’ll be doing even more of that in the fall.

We’ll report back on that here on the H&W blog in the new academic year.

Have a wonderful summer!

While Mexican immigrants tend to experience difficulties accessing healthcare services and often experience many barriers to health including low rates of health insurance coverage and low income and educational levels, they paradoxically also enjoy better outcomes in many areas including perinatal health, diabetes, heart disease and more, a phenomenon known as the Immigrant Paradox.

This conference explores the two-sided coin of the health disadvantages and advantages of the Mexican population, bringing in nationally recognized experts on Mexican immigration and health and showcasing CUNY-based expertise, as well.  This conference will enable a dialogue between local and national scholars, as well as between academics, advocates and practitioners.

The conference will be streamed live over the internet and audio and video proceedings from this conference will be archived and made available. They will constitute the first holdings of an electronic archive of Mexican studies materials at the City University of New York. Conference proceedings may be published.

The conference will also serve as the academic launch event for the newly formed approved CUNY Institute for Mexican Studies.

“State law provides remedies for workers who are discriminated against based on sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, age, disabilities or veteran status, but it provides no help for workers who are abused or mistreated for other reasons.

That’s why PSC is joining the coalition fight to change the law by passing the NY Health Workplace Act, a bill that would grant employees the right to sue their employers if they have been harmed psychologically, physically, or economically by workplace bullying.” (PSC)

Have a look at CUNY’s Professional Staff Congress’s (PSC) Stop Workplace Bully page, and sign the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT) petition supporting the act.
