A Call to Action for May Day:

The Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) at Stony Brook is organizing a Free University on May Day to actualize the promise of what we believe public higher education should be: free, open, and accessible to all. By holding classes outside—in public view rather than behind closed doors—we will be the openness, the transparency, and the equal access that we demand from Stony Brook as a public university. The Free University will also be a public demonstration of the value of Stony Brook’s faculty and graduate student labor. Together, we resist the privatization and commodification of a university education. And we stand in solidarity with the principles of the Free University movement, as articulated by the Free University of NYC.

We invite you to join in this action. Here are details about the Stony Brook Free University:

When: May Day (May 1, 2013), from 8:30am into the evening.

Where: SUNY-Stony Brook Main Campus

Who: Faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff of Stony Brook University, plus community members, allies, and the general public (especially those denied access to higher education due to financial constraints).

How to participate: Faculty and students are invited to transport their regularly-scheduled classes to the Free University. Faculty, students, staff, and community members are also invited to propose their own classes/discussions/teach-ins for the Free University. All are welcome to participate as teachers, and all are welcome as students.

Questions? Please do not hesitate to contact the GSEU at SBUGSEU@gmail.com.

In solidarity,
