Language Revitalization in the 21st Century: Going Global, Staying Local

The Endangered Language Initiative of The CUNY Graduate Center and the International Centre for Language Revitalisation of the Auckland University of Technology will be holding this two day conference on language revitalization at The Graduate Center in New York City. The first day will include two keynote addresses and a host of invited speakers, while the second day will include a poster session and film festival. A central goal of the symposium is to share successful revitalization strategies. Oral presentations will be organized around the following themes: Learning that works; Development of tools, resources, and materials; Collaborative initiatives between communities and academics; Increasing awareness of threatened languages and revitalization movements.
Abstracts on language revitalization are welcomed for poster presentation at the symposium. Abstracts are limited to one single-spaced page, including data and examples. All text should fit within an A4 page, 12-point font with 2.5cm (approx. 1-inch) margin all around. Abstract submission is by e-mail attachment only. Save your abstract as a PDF file and name it with your last name. Send the abstract as a PDF attachment to the following address: langrevit21st@gmail.com. Prof Tania Ka’ai, Director of the National Maori Language Institute in New Zealand, is interested in collaborating on a Symposium on Language Revitalisation in New York City in May 2012, with the CUNY Graduate Center/Endangered Language Initiative as a partner. The National Maori Language Institute has expanded and now has an International Centre of Language Revitalisation. For more information on the planning meeting, contact Professor Blevins.

Mahongwe/Ikota language sessions
Several graduate students have been meeting with a speaker of Mahongwe/Ikota, a highly endangered Bantu language of Gabon, to begin documentation and description of the language.
Spring 2011 Workshop on Language Documentation
Prof. Daniel Kaufman has been holding a weekly workshop which is free and open to all in Spring 2011 at the CUNY Graduate Center. This workshop covers language documentation and description. It meets from 5pm – 7pm in room 7102 on the following Thursdays: Feb.3, Feb.10, Feb.24, Mar.3, Mar.17, Mar.24, Apr.7. , Apr 14, Apr. 21, May 15.
