I’d like to spread the word about a program called Artist Access. This
program, at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, provides
artist-specific health care options for uninsured artists and creative
workers. Anyone making their living through a creative means: dancers,
musicians, graphic designers, yoga teachers, film makers, actors,
creative writers, have the option to exchange services for medical
care. The artists enrolled are offered a range of comprehensive
services including doctor visits, hospitalizations, emergency care,
medical and surgical procedures, prescriptions, MRI and ambulatory
surgery at any hospital or clinic within the North Brooklyn Health
Network. Based on a sliding scale, artists will pay for each clinic
visit between $15 and $60. The artist can then earn credits with
artistic services/performances to “pay” off this fee for services.
Anyone interested or looking for more information can call
877-244-5600 or 718-630-3069 to speak directly with the program
coordinator, Amy Duquette.
Below are some examples of how members are offering their talents in
the hospital in exchange for healthcare:
-reading to children in the outpatient Pediatric Practice
-making art with hospitalized children in the Pediatric Practice
-offering food demos in the Women Infant and Child Program to educate
families about healthy, inexpensive meals for their children
-offering relaxation techniques to the adult and children as they wait
to see their doctor
-providing yoga classes for staff and clients
-providing musical and dance entertainment at various staff
celebrations and events
-face painting at children’s events
-photographing newborns delivered at Woodhull and providing the new
moms a professional, framed image
-offering art, dance and music lessons for the children at the Employee Daycare
-providing aerobics to the patients in the Psychiatric Unit
-painting the windows in patients rooms for the holidays
-painting murals in various waiting rooms
-giving exercise and dance lessons through the Healthy Children
program aimed to combat childhood obesity
-offering poetry to patients on annual Poem In Your Pocket Day
-role-playing with the medical residents as they practice
communicating difficult news to patients
-assisting the Medical Communications Department to make educational
fliers and brochures
-assisting at the annual community Book Fair

The Doctoral Students’ Council (DSC) provides financial support for events and other projects organized by students at the CUNY Graduate Center. So far in the 2010-11 academic year, DSC has awarded almost $8,300 in grants to a diverse set of student-organized events and projects.
The next application deadline is Wednesday, 26 January 2011. The maximum award amount for Regular Grants is $600, and $95 for Start-Up Grants.
Regular grants are frequently used to fund student conferences and speaker series (DTSA Professionalization events are funded in part by the DSC). Start-Up Grants go through an abridged approval process and are for pilot programs, small events, and other projects which might not require a larger grant. For example: a staged reading, a lecture, film screening, academic social event, etc.
To learn more about DSC Grants and their requirements, or to submit an application, please visit: cunydsc.org/grants.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email Kyle Ferguson, the Officer for Funding, at funding@cunydsc.org.
