16 February An Open Forum on Professional and Academic Ethics
An informal dialogue about ethical questions in academic and professional activities, with emphasis on graduate studies and early career work.
23 February A conversation with Segal Center Visiting Scholars Li Shanghong, Anita Rakoczy, and Andrzej Żurowski
Join us for a conversation with scholars visiting from China, Hungary, and Poland. Prof. Daniel Gerould will moderate.
8 March Mock First Exam Oral
This mock oral experience is intended to offer a first-hand view of what to expect for level-one students as they prepare for the first exam. There will be two abbreviated mock orals with debriefing and discussion following. Profs. Jean Graham-Jones and David Savran will conduct the oral and moderate the discussion.
15 March Demystifying the Handbook 3: Conferences
Eager to participate in conferences but unsure how they work? Curious to know more about the major theatre conferences or about other conferences? This session will include both a “how to” guide to conferences as well as student testimonials about their experiences. Brooke Christensen hosts, with Profs. Marvin Carlson and David Savran.
22 March Guest speaker: Kateřina Bohadlová (Academy of Performing Arts, Prague): “The Secret of Canovaccio: Transformation of the Scenario”
29 March Workshop 3: Publish and Flourish
This workshop will address the nuts and bolts of academic publishing, including placing a performance or book review in a renowned journal, revising a seminar paper into a peer reviewed article. A panel of published students and faculty will discuss their experiences and will offer advice. Prof. James Wilson will moderate.
19 April Guest speaker: Joanne Pottlitzer (independent scholar): “Symbols of Resistance: The Legacy of Artists under Pinochet.” Co-sponsored by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center and the Ph.D. Programs in Music, Art History, and Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages.
26 April Career Paths for the Theatre M.A. and Ph.D.
Join us for a conversation with four individuals who have put their graduate work in Theatre Studies to successful use outside the university. NOTE: At 6 p.m., there will be a celebration of our Alumni Review‘s tenth anniversary. Please stay to chat with returning alumni, faculty, students, and friends of the Theatre Program.
10 May Dissertation Colloquium 2
What is the dissertation writing process? What are its challenges? What are your colleagues researching and writing? Please join Dan Venning and a panel of level-three students to learn more about the dissertation’s different phases, “from conception to delivery.”
NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, all events will take place 4:15-6:15 p.m., in the Green Room of the Ph.D. Program in Theatre (room 3111).
