8 September       Presentations by recent recipients of program travel grants

Students receiving program grants for research and travel will share their experiences both within and outside the archives. Professionalization Representative Brooke Christensen hosts.

15 September     Demystifying the handbook 1:  Language exams

This session will provide information about what the language requirement is, how the language exams are structured, and what resources students may use to prepare for this program require­ment. Brooke Christensen hosts, with Profs. Daniel Gerould and Jean Graham-Jones.

22 September     Lecture by Professor Helen Richardson (Brooklyn College): “The Théâtre du Soleil and Ariane Mnouchkine: Towards a Cosmopolitan Vision in the Age of Globalization.”

6 October            Workshop 1:  Creating and building your CV

Whether you are getting ready to go on the job market or just beginning the Ph.D. program, you won’t want to miss this interactive workshop on crafting, revising, and refining the academic CV. Examining sample documents, we will discuss the elements of highly effective CVs, and there will be opportunities to workshop your own document. In addition, a special topic of this workshop will be on highlighting conference presentations and panels, and we will discuss the process for submitting a conference proposal. Organized and led by the program’s Placement Officer, Prof. James Wilson.

13 October          Lecture by Professor Stacy Wolf (Princeton University): “Divas, Darlings, and Dames: Women in Broadway Musicals of the 1960s” (co-sponsored with CLAGS).

27 October          Demystifying the handbook 2:  First exams

This session will include a breakdown of the format of the written and oral sections of the first exam, insight from professors about what is expected of a student taking the exam, and recommen­dations from students about how to prepare. Brooke Christensen hosts, with Profs. David Savran and Jean Graham-Jones.

4 November        Mock-Interview Marathon

This one-day marathon of twenty-minute mock interviews is intended to prepare level-three students as they enter the job market. Specific information will be provided in the early fall. Please note: the marathon takes place on Friday, November 4th.  Anyone may attend open interviews and the post-marathon debriefing session.

10 November      Applied Pedagogy: Reflections from the field

CUNY offers a range of teaching opportunities for graduate students in the Theatre Program. This panel presentation and discussion will focus on the cutting-edge methodology and resources used by professors, adjuncts, and graduate teaching fellows in speech, theatre appreciation, acting, and directing classes. Organized and led by the program’s Placement Officer, Prof. James Wilson.

22 November      Lecture by Professor Rosamund Bartlett (Rose Bruford College, King’s College London, and the Anton Chekhov Foundation): “‘We need new forms’: Innovation in the Russian Theatre from Chekhov to the Futurists” (co-sponsored with the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center).  Please note: the lecture will take place on Tuesday, 22 November, at  4:15 p.m.

1 December        Workshop 2:  Creating your teaching portfolio

More and more search committees are requesting teaching portfolios from prospective candidates on the academic job market. This workshop will provide valuable information on the contents and presentation of one’s teaching documents, including the philosophy of teaching statement, sample syllabi, teaching observation reports, and student evaluations. Participants will have an opportu­nity to begin crafting their own teaching statements and receive feedback from their peers. Organized and led by the program’s Placement Officer, Prof. James Wilson.

6 December        Dissertation colloquium 1

What is the dissertation writing process? What are its challenges? What are your colleagues researching and writing? Please join organizer Dan Venning and other level-three students to learn more about the dissertation’s different phases, “from conception to delivery.” Please note: the colloquium will take place on Tuesday, 6 December, 12 noon to 1:45 p.m.

NOTE:  Unless otherwise stated, all events will take place 4:15-6:15 p.m., in the Green Room of the Ph.D. Program in Theatre (room 3111).
