Call For Participation: CUNY Equity Week

March 30th to April 3rd

What does it mean to be a contingent worker at CUNY?

It means low pay, job insecurity, lack of health insurance, no academic freedom, and the inability to fully utilize all of our own resources to help our students and our university.  Contingent workers make up over half of the faculty in the CUNY system, and this is benefiting no one.  Full-time, tenure-track positions have been eliminated in favor of adjunctification, and contingent workers are being laid off at alarming rates.

Now is the time for all of us to do something about this.  Contingent and full-time workers alike must draw attention to the problems facing CUNY, and we must do so in our classrooms.  CUNY Equity Week provides the opportunity to tell our students what inequities we are faced with and how it impacts them.

 What is CUNY Equity Week?

CUNY Equity Week provides the opportunity and resources to reach out to our students colleagues, and to discuss these issues.  For all or a portion of a class during the week of March 30th – April 3rd both adjuncts and full-time faculty will make a coordinated effort to incorporate information on adjunct teaching conditions into class lessons.  You may have a class discussion, a persuasive letter exercise, a statistical analysis of adjunct and full-time wages for the same workload, or an extra-credit assignment to find a link between course materials and adjunct labor.

Additionally, this year we are providing access to materials that will help you and your students map the CUNY system. Please contact us at theadjunctproject@gmail.com for the materials. Or come to one of our equity workshops on March 19 at 7pm  and March 23 at 7pm. Or find our table in the lobby of the Graduate Center during the weeks of March 9th thr 13th, and March 23rd thr 27th.

 What Can I Do?

You can commit to putting a blurb on your syllabus about the position of adjuncts in the academic system. You can dedicate one class session, or a portion of it, to teaching your students about equity and how it relates to their studying conditions. You can encourage colleagues to do so, too.

CUNY Equity Week 2009

It will run from March 30th until April 3rd.  Stay tuned for more information

International Students who are in Non-Resident Alien Tax Status and who are requesting a refund.

  1. In addition to the Form 843 discussed in you must include Form 8316.
  2. Mail your request for refund to Austin, TX 73301-0215.

The Office of International Students at The Graduate Center has forms and complete instructions for claiming a refund.

We Try to Answer Your Questions about Health Insurance

(All of this information was obtained at an informational session with representatives from CUNY and NYSHIP on 10/29/08 at 12pm.)

Please visit our health insurance page for additional information.

When can we enroll?

Enrollment will start in November.

When does my coverage start?

If you’re already employed in one of the eligible titles and have a reasonable expectation of continuing employment, then you will be covered starting on 1/1/09.  If you’re new to the system, sorry, you have to wait until 2/1/09 for coverage to begin.  This means if you’re currently an adjunct at a college and receive a reappointment letter, your coverage will start on 1/1/09.

I’m a first year Chancellor’s Fellow?  What about me?

Well, congratulations!  You’ve probably already received information about changing your appointment to a newly developed Graduate Assistant B title to be covered.  If you missed that, you may want to contact the Provost’s Office (212-817-2200)

For Pete’s sake, adjuncts don’t get paid in the summer.  Will I still have insurance?

Yes!  If you have a reasonable expectation of continuing employment in the fall.  Just let human resources at the Graduate Center know and they’ll fix it up for you.  The deduction might be slightly more from your semester’s paychecks.

Speaking of, what’s the premium?

The individual plan is a bi-weekly deduction of $5.44 and the family plan is a bi-weekly deduction of $46.25.

I’m currently on the PSC Welfare Fund.  Do I keep that?

Nope.  You must enroll in the NYSHIP plan for health coverage.

I work at a community college and I keep hearing that I need to get changed over to the state payroll to qualify for this plan.  Help!

Easy as pie, contact Human Resources at the Graduate Center and they will walk you through it.
